Knowing You: Through Conscience

For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them. Romans 2:14-15

My heart's greatest desire
Is to know You, Lord
The depth of who You are
To be fully known by You
The apple of Your eye

Would we know how to honor You
If Your commandments were not writ?
When You created us in Your image
Did right and wrong inherently fit?

You say our conscience bears witness
And Your law is on our hearts
Before we ever heard Your Word
We knew where goodness starts

So often we stray from Your presence
Ignore the urgings to do what's right
We push past with our own selfishness
Then wonder why life becomes such a fight

That inner moral compass
That tells us right from wrong
Could not, would not be our conscience
Unless it came from You all along

Lord, I humbly ask
That You shield our ears
From the influence of those
Whose conscience is seared

To ensure we won't be fooled
By deceitful tales we dream
In You we must remain
To protect from Satan's scheme

God, reshape our corrupted conscience
With the truth of Your Word
Make us aware of whatever stands between
Us knowing You more intimately
