Why Me?
what is man that you are mindful of him,...
Psalm 8:4
Why me? And when I say me, I mean you too!
Usually when you hear someone cry out, "why me?" it is because of a tragedy or disappointment in their life. But, I'd like to pose this question in a different way.
"Jesus loves me this I know", but why?
WHY does He love me and WHY does He love you?
Why did God decide to create us—mankind? He knew what a mess we would make of this world, what pain and heartbreak we would cause and experience here on earth, but yet, He still chose to do so.
Multiple times throughout Genesis 1 we read, God saw that His creation was good, but it wasn't until after He created man in His own image, male and female, He blessed them, told them to be fruitful and multiply, fill the earth, subdue it—giving them dominion over all the animals and plants, that He saw everything He had made and it was very good.
I recently posted a short video on social media exclaiming how I'm convinced there is no one on the face of this earth that loves my children as much as I do! (To my knowledge there is no "love" meter that could be used to measure and prove this proclamation, so you'll just have to take my word for it).
I am blessed to be called mom to four children. They are adults now, providing for themselves, but from the day they were born, their beautiful, wrinkled little newborn faces have been imprinted on my heart. Their cries would cause a literal physical reaction in my body. Their laughter and playfulness throughout the years brought, and still bring, much joy. But even to this day, when they are hurting emotionally or physically, I find their pain to be all-consuming of my thoughts and prayers.
If in my human imperfection as a mom, I experience such a deep love for my children, how much greater is the perfect love of God?
Since we are made in the image of God, might He respond to our joys and pains in a similar way? Since my children are on my mind continually, wouldn't we be on God's mind continually as well?
How precious to me are your thoughts, O God!
How vast is the sum of them!
If I would count them, they are more than the sand.
Psalm 139:17-18
My children didn't do anything to warrant my deep love for them except to be born. They were totally reliant on me and their dad for care, protection, and nurturing. Totally dependent.
And we didn't do anything to warrant God's perfect love for us either! I can only infer that He created us—you and me—because He wanted us. He wanted to share His goodness, His life, and His rule over His beautiful creation. We exist out of God's abundance, not because He "needed" us to fill some void. He loves us so much that He made a plan to reconcile us to Him after humans fell into sin.
but God shows his own love for us that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 5:8
Love is not only something God feels for us—it is who He is.
We are His.
He loves us so much that He suffered and died for us!
Look at the timing.
We haven't done anything to earn His love.
There is no quality in you or me that makes us worthier than the next guy.
Not once we understand Him.
Not once we become faithful.
Not once we clean ourselves up.
He loves us because we are His—made in His image. Only a God who IS love can love like this.
So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.
1 John 4:16
